The beautifully unspoilt county of Herefordshire is renowned for its epicurean produce. A childhood spent sampling orchard fruits in their orchards at Gattertop was the inspiration behind founder Gemma Standeven’s delicious vodka drinks. Benefitting from an abundance of home-grown produce at the historic family farm of Gattertop, Gemma experimented with various spirits until she found her award-winning recipes. The results are two extraordinary vodkas that are versatile and encourage curious drinkers who seek flavour.
The home of Gattertop Drinks Co is the ancient farm of the same name in Herefordshire, which dates back to 1085 and is referred to (as Gadredehope) in the Domesday book. It stands in its own valley, among undulating fields, woodland and orchards that have borne fruit for thousands of years.
It was a glut of the delicious damsons from the orchards at Gattertop each summer that inspired the creation of the brand. After much experimenting, Gemma’s damson vodka formula proved exceptionally popular with friends and family and she was persuaded to create it in larger quantities. Production increased from litre bottles and demi johns to full size barrels and moved from the kitchen to a barn on the farm – and the first product – Damson No 12 vodka liqueur was born.
Since then, Founder Gemma Standeven, identified a gap in the botanical vodka market as an alternative to Gin. She has become an expert in Damsons and is in the process of being at the forefront of a new initiative, ‘Damson Dialogues’ – a learning opportunity with experts in the field of damsons to maximise the benefits, history and the properties of damsons.
When Damson No 12 was entered into the Great Taste Awards it was immediately awarded two stars in its first year. It has subsequently won multiple awards and is still made to the same recipe in the same careful way: steeping handpicked damsons in Autumn from the orchards in quality vodka for a whole year to fully develop the delicate flavours, before being filtered, bottled and labelled by hand in the old barn at Gattertop.
In 2020, Gemma created a new product to add to her award winning Damson No 12. Botanic No 7 tells the same orchard story, and brings a collection of other distinctive ingredients that our orchards provide from different times of the year. We have the blossom and flowers from spring and the leaves from summer so that Gattertop Drinks Co has a drink for all seasons. In winter the orchards are resting.
