BLOSSOM WATCH

Get involved with the UK’s second national Blossom Watch

As the National Trust launches its second year of ‘blossom watch’ day on 23rd April, we couldn’t be more supportive at Gattertop Drinks as we, like others across the country, are being encouraged to savour the sights and scents of one of nature’s precious but fleeting glories – the blossom season.

It is one of the most beautiful times of year, when the trees are bursting into life and each fruit-bearing tree, bush or hedgerow produces a different, unique and delicate flower.

We will be watching the weather closely at Gattertop as the blossom is not only vital in determining the fruit harvest in the autumn for our ‘distinctive, delicious’ Damson No 12 vodka! but also the flowers are a core ingredient in our ‘exceptional tasting’ Botanic No 7 vodka. What we don’t want over the next few weeks is strong winds or heavy rains, so let’s all have our fingers firmly crossed!

Why Blossom is so important at Gattertop

Over the next few weeks, the insect pollinators, the buzzing bees, will start to show themselves in increasing numbers as the weather warms up to ensure those flowers develop into fruit!

The blossom that we are keeping an eye on in the orchards here at Gattertop is on the apple and damson trees.

The clusters of blooms are still tight at the moment, with just the dark pink tips showing on some of the Browns Apple; a vintage apple dating back to the 1900 and the Merryweather and Farleigh Damson trees, all of which produce flowers to bring a sweetness to our Botanic No 7.
Delicate to harvest, we will shortly be busy bees handpicking the individual flowers for this years Botanic No 7. In the meantime, let’s soak it all up and breathe in the sweetness of spring:
